Handex was actively involved in the design, construction, and optimization of a landfill gas recovery system for the removal and treatment of hydrogen sulfide (H2S) gas, as well as other landfill gases. The system was installed to mitigate offsite impacts to local residences of H2S gas. The gas extraction system includes an extraction blower, thermal oxidizer and acid gas neutralizer. The primary goal of this system is to prevent any off-site migration of H2S gas. Current average flow into the system is 2,000 SCFM. To date, Handex has recovered over 6,000,000 pounds of H2S.

Handex personnel operate and maintain the gas extraction system for 24 hours per day, 7 days per week. Field personnel in conjunction with Handex project managers, review operations daily and make adjustments or modifications to maximize recovery rates. They monitor the influent and effluent landfill gas concentrations, maintain and inspect all equipment and controls, inspect the landfill cap and associated drainage, and coordinate delivery of materials and shipping of wastewater daily. System technicians also maintain vacuum control of landfill gas and complete reports for all site activities. Field personnel worked directly with the NJDEP to program PLC software for the on-site system that can be reviewed and maintained remotely, using CLICK PLC and C-more Micro-Graphic Programming Software.
