Most landfill concerns focus on Methane (CH4) production, collection and remediation, although Hydrogen Sulfide (H2S) can be a significant component to address as well. At lower concentrations, H2S has a strong, unpleasant odor. At higher concentrations, serious health risks such as respiratory problems, dizziness and even fatality in extreme circumstances can occur.

"The gas is highly soluble and tends to dissolve in landfill leachate only to act as an emissions source when leachate collections are exposed to the air. H2S emissions can be problematic for local communities due to associated health risks, noxious odors, damage to landfill gas collection piping and equipment."

There are several remediation methods available to mitigate H2S migration. These include:

  • Excavation to Recover Recyclable Material
  • Capping
  • Air Sparging
  • Soil Vapor Extraction
  • Pump and Treat System

"In most cases, landfill remediation efforts will need to be monitored by the EPA or another regulatory agency to ensure that landfill operations remain compliant with established criteria."
