How Can You Clean up Your Landfill Site?

For most communities, an actively operating landfill is imperative. Regardless of how many resources landfill operators put toward generating zero waste, it continues to be a necessary evil. While most landfill problems and concerns focus on Methane (CH4) production, collection and remediation, Hydrogen Sulfide (H2S) is a significant component that should be addressed as well.

Potential Health Risks

At lower concentrations, the gas has a strong, unpleasant odor that is similar to that of rotten eggs. At higher concentrations, serious health risks such as respiratory problems, dizziness and even fatality can occur in extreme circumstances. For this reason, any landfill sites where off site gas migration is detected will need to take corrective action within 60 days to mitigate the problem.

Landfill Remediation

Several remediation methods are available to mitigate H2S migration, such as:

  • Excavation to Recover Recyclable Material
  • Capping
  • Air Sparging
  • Soil Vapor Extraction
  • Pump and Treat System

Due to the scale and complexity of landfill remediation projects, landfill operators will benefit from hiring a consultant to perform assessments, design and construction and ongoing monitoring. The purpose of ongoing evaluations and monitoring is to ensure that contamination is being contained, there are no environmental hazards present and to develop a plan for closure. When looking for an environmental firm to examine the site and groundwater conditions, you’ll need to make sure they have experience with test borings and water quality analyses to identify and monitor environmental impacts.
